So we've stuck the out-of-office on and cranked the headphones for Limerick, the new single from Black Country four-piece Headwired. Straight off, we're into hooky-as-hell guitar work that evokes Oasis jamming What Difference licks before booting in twists and creative runs, all underpinned by super-slick production.

Limerick is a fast-paced, brassy, guitar-driven banger that could land you in trouble if you're behind the wheel while it’s on, especially when the chorus gets in your face with its confident array of backing vocals and singer/bassist George Langford’s impassioned snarl.

And it doesn’t let up–the only respite from this onslaught of Midlands rock is when the breakdown briefly pulls back the energy, only to charge back up with an electrifying lead-in delivered by guitarists Frankie Cast and Jack Redfern and powerhouse drummer Joe Roberts, who then conducts the whole business to the sweetest half-tempo wind-down.

You can see why they’ve been opening their set with this belter. I just have to wonder what happened in the namesake Irish city that prompted this song. Whatever it was, it was clearly intense and memorable, if hazily so.

Anyway, Limerick is now on my own pre-gig playlist, ready for shazamming. Get it on yours.
