Johnny Marr’s auction was a huge success. The 111-lot sale realised £3,649,280 – more than tripling the estimate. A fitting tribute to the most influential guitarist of his generation, the auction welcomed registrants from 34 countries, 81% of whom were new to Christie's. They bid passionately throughout, from the lowest-priced lots to the iconic guitars, making the sale last over 5 hours.

How Much Did Johnny Marr’s Guitars Sell For?

The auction began with a video of Johnny Marr and Noel Gallagher discussing their favourite items. Strong competition was evident immediately. Lot 1, Marr’s solid-body electric guitar, Les Paul Standard, sold for £35,840, over seven times its estimate.

The Smiths-Era Rickenbacker 330 Jetglo – £358,400

Next, Johnny Marr's 1982 Rickenbacker 330 Jetglo, closely linked to his Smiths-era sound, sold for £358,400 after five minutes of competitive bidding, far surpassing its £60,000-80,000 estimate.

The 1960 Gibson ES-355 Cherry Red – £204,800

The 1960 Cherry Red Gibson ES-355, purchased for Marr in 1984 by Sire Records founder Seymour Stein, attracted strong bidding. Marr joked The Smiths would sign if Stein bought him a new guitar. The instrument sold for £204,800 (estimate £100,000-150,000).

The ‘James Bond Theme’ Fender Jaguar – £46,080

Over five hours into the sale, Lot 102, the Fender Johnny Marr Signature Jaguar, Comet Sparkle, 2017, used to record the 'James Bond Theme' for No Time To Die (2021) and performed with Billie Eilish at the Brits, sold for £46,080 after nearly five minutes of bidding by eleven participants (estimate £8,000-12,000).

Charity Donations from the Johnny Marr Auction

100% of the hammer price of 31 lots, spanning 10 guitars, 1980s concert posters and sales awards, will be split equally between The Guide Dogs for the Blind Association and The National Autistic Society, UK registered charities (charity numbers 209617 and 269425).
